This should be a straight forward exercise but there are a few gotchas that mean it doesn&#8217;t always work the first time.<\/p>\n<p>This post describes the process pretty much from the start because as with other things if you don&#8217;t do things correctly right at the start you have problems later on.<\/p>\n<p>Note that shared folders, permissions and ACL are complex issues with multiple ways to solve problems. What I am describing in this post is the solutions that work for me, I don&#8217;t need a complicated system, I need my family to be able to access files along with other systems. It&#8217;s not an office environment with a lot of users and permissions.<\/p>\n<p>SMB &#8211; this is the <strong>S<\/strong>erver <strong>M<\/strong>essage <strong>B<\/strong>lock, for Linux it is synonymous with &#8220;Samba&#8221; the Linux replacement for Windows file\/folder sharing. So when we talk about SMB we are really talking Windows shares. CIFS is the Microsoft implementation of SMB.<\/p>\n<h2>Steps<\/h2>\n<table class=\"zsteps\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 18px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">1.<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">Create a RAID array from &#8220;Storage | RAID Management&#8221;. I called mine &#8220;RAID1Mirror&#8221;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 199px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 199px;\">2.<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 199px;\">Create a file system from &#8220;Storage | File Systems&#8221;. I use ext4 its not perfect but a good choice.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 18px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">3.<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">Still in File Systems and after the file system has been created you should again select the device and click on &#8220;Mount&#8221;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 18.3333px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 18.3333px;\">4.<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 18.3333px;\">Now you can create a shared folder by going to &#8220;Access Rights Management | Shared Folders&#8221; and click on &#8220;Add&#8221;:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2448\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2448\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2448 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zoyinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/OMVCreateWindowsShare02-300x194.gif\" alt=\"OMV Create Shared Folder\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.zoyinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/OMVCreateWindowsShare02-300x194.gif 300w, http:\/\/www.zoyinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/OMVCreateWindowsShare02-150x97.gif 150w, http:\/\/www.zoyinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/OMVCreateWindowsShare02-463x300.gif 463w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">+ Click to enlarge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The important thing is to set &#8220;Permissions&#8221; to &#8220;Everyone: read\/write&#8221;. This will set the base permissions, this doesn&#8217;t mean everyone will be able to access this, that level of access will be controlled at the SMB layer.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously the other choices are there for a reason, but if you want an uncomplicated solution and are not too concerned about security then &#8220;Everyone: read\/write&#8221; is an easy choice.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 18px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">5.<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">Got to &#8220;Services | SMB\/CIFS&#8221; and select &#8220;Enable&#8221;, give it a workgroup name, set &#8220;Local Browse Master&#8221;, &#8220;Time Server&#8221; and most importantly.<\/p>\n<p>Click on &#8220;Save&#8221; and wait for the &#8220;The configuration has changed&#8221; message to appear and then click on &#8220;Apply&#8221;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 18px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">6.<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 18px;\">Now go to &#8220;Shares&#8221; folder while still in &#8220;Services | SMB\/CIFS&#8221;.
